Q.  Do I need a passport to travel to Mexico?

A. The US Department of State has announced a plan called the "Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative," designed to enhance border security, which will require people traveling between the United States and the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada to have a passport to enter or re-enter the United States. Citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda will be affected.

Beginning January 23 2007, a passport will be required for all air and sea travel to or from Mexico and Canada. Canadian and Mexican citizens, and US citizens returning from Canada or Mexico, will be required to present a passport to enter or re-enter the United States.

Q.  Is it necessary to rent a car?

A. A car is handy, but not absolutely necessary.  The bus service is very good as a bus leaves every 15 to 20 minutes along the highway (about an 8 to 10 minute walk from the house) and heads directly into downtown Puerto Vallarta (via the many stops along the way).  You can easily take the bus in the other direction to Punta De Mita or Destiladaros beach--about 15 minutes away.

If you do rent a car there is secure off street parking provided within the walls of Casa Tabachines.  We highly recommend you contact Gecko Rent a Car in Bucerias for your car rental needs.

Buses are privately owned and some look a bit funky but they get you where you want to go and you are woven into the Mexican fabric as you journey. Don't be surprised if an entertainer leaps on board to belt out a song about lost love and overdue rent. Mexicans tend to tip a few pesos whether the entertainment is Vegas caliber or not.

Q.  Where can I buy groceries?

A. There are several small grocery stores in the area.  You probably will want to stop on your way from the airport to pick up some supplies and we will provide that information with your final documents.  Unless you are on a special diet, most foods can be obtained in the Puerto Vallarta area. Be sure to bring along your Sam's Club Card as there is a new Sam's Club and Wal-Mart not far from the airport.

Q.  What clothes do I need to bring?

A. Shorts, tee shirts and bathing suites. Long pants aren't necessary unless you really like dressing up for dinner.  There are only a few place in downtown Puerto Vallarta that have a dress code and require long pants--other than that a clean tee shirt and shorts will do.  January through March the evenings may get a little cool, so a sweater or lightweight jacket might be in order. If you plan to travel inland, the evenings are considerable cooler so long plants and a jacket should be packed.  As with any tropical area you could experience rain showers so it would be wise to pack a lightweight fold up umbrella.  Don't worry though, if you do get wet the sun will dry you off in no time!  Be sure to pack good walking shoes as the streets are paved with cobblestones and you won't want to twist an ankle.  Remember not to over pack--although everyone does!

Q.  What's there to do around here?

A.  As much, or as little as you want to do.  We can provide details of the many nearby activities that include the best places for swimming, snorkeling and diving, whale watching, fishing, kayaking, boating, surfing, wind surfing, parasailing, horseback riding, golfing, and shopping.

Our Property Manager
can arrange a fishing charter,
 whale watching tour,
snorkel and diving tour,
or a sightseeing tour
around the Bay of Banderas

You might just want to relax poolside and sip on a cool one, or take a few steps down to the private sunbathing terrace.  A few more steps down, takes you to the beach palapa on a raised terrace.  Just a few more steps down and through a locked gate and you will be on the sand, and a short walk over to the marina, or a 10 minute walk to Playa La  Manzanilla--La Cruz's beautiful swimming beach.

Remember, it's your vacation, so do it your way.

Q.  Are there good restaurants and places for evening entertainment?

A.   We keep an updated list of great local restaurants in La Cruz and Bucerias, including a wonderful street taco restaurant in La Cruz that you won't want to miss.  We also have a list of establishments that provide evening entertainment.  For a map of La Cruz streets and some of the great restaurants in the village, please refer to the About the Area Page of this website.
